Almaty
Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan, known for its cultural heritage, natural beauty and active urban life. The city held the status of the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997, and although the capital of Kazakhstan is now Astana, Almaty remains the cultural, financial and economic center of the country.
The Almaty center is the heart of the city, combining Soviet architecture, modern buildings and green parks. The center is home to major cultural and entertainment venues, as well as popular shopping and business districts. The center is often referred to as the place where tradition and modernity intersect, making for an interesting and appealing experience.
‘Golden Square’ Almaty is a prestigious district in Almaty center, which is considered to be one of the most convenient and comfortable for living and working. The square was named because of its high property value and developed infrastructure. The boundaries of the Golden Square are conditionally delineated by Abaya, Zheltoksan, Satpayev and Nazarbayev Streets, and the district resembles a square shape, which gave it its name.

Some iconic places in Almaty city center:
1. Republic Square
The central square of the city, the historical and cultural symbol of Almaty. The square features the Monument of Independence of Kazakhstan with a sculpture of the Golden Leopard (a leopard on top of a column), as well as statues of great rulers and public figures.
Around the square are government buildings, including the residence of the President of Kazakhstan and the Akimat (city administration) building.
2. Park named after 28 Panfilov Guardsmen
A large and beautiful park dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War is located near the center and is a popular place for walks and recreation.
The park is home to the Ascension Cathedral, one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Almaty, built in the early 20th century from wood and without a single nail.
In the park there is also the Memorial of Glory and the Eternal Flame, dedicated to the heroes of the war.
3. General Panfilov Street
A pedestrian street in the center of Almaty, which has been reconstructed and landscaped. Street events, concerts and fairs are often held here, and it is one of the most popular places for walking among locals and tourists.
The street is decorated with greenery, fountains, sculptures and various art objects, as well as numerous cafes and restaurants.

4. Arbat (Zhibek Zholy pedestrian street)
Arbat in Almaty is an analogue of Moscow's Arbat. It is a pedestrian street with street artists, craftsmen, musicians and many shops. It has a lively atmosphere and Arbat has become a popular place for strolling and entertainment.
5. Abay State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre
This is the oldest theater in Kazakhstan, founded in 1934, located in the heart of the city. The theater building impresses with its classicist architecture, and its repertoire includes classical and modern productions, opera and ballet performances.
6. Kok-Tobe
Although not centrally located, Kok-Tobe is an iconic landmark easily accessible from the city center by cable car or public transport.
Kok-Tobe is home to an observation deck overlooking the city, an amusement park, cafes and the famous Beatles sculpture.
7. Central State Museum of Kazakhstan
One of the largest museums in Central Asia, located near the city centre. Here you can learn about the history of Kazakhstan, see exhibits related to nomadic culture, archaeology and modernity of the country.
